Come to Washington for a special learning experience that brings to life what you've studied at school and seen in the news. Find out firsthand how our democracy works as you explore our nation's past and present with other students from across the country.

Close Up Washington is a program of the nonprofit, nonpartisan Close Up Foundation, the nation's largest civic education organization. Since 1970, the Foundation has given more than 420,000 students, educators, older Americans, and community members a Close Up experience in government in the nation's captial.

REQUIREMENTS

To be required for close-up, you need to be a senior and have taken a governement class. The students raise money for the trip by selling Tekamah-Herman sweatshirts, t-shirts, and shorts, by concession stands, and having soup suppers.

ACTIVITES

Close Up is a learning experience for the students in Tekamah-Herman and all around the U.S. Students spend six days and six nights in Washington and attend face-to-face meetings with Washington experts. They attend seminars on the judiciary, international relations, and current policical, social, and economic issues. The students also so to special activities on topics such as the federal budget, international relations, and political debates. They have the opportunity to examine current issues and the central tenets of our democracy in small group discussions and also attend an evening at the theater. Free time is allowed for the students to explore Washington's many historical and cultural sites.
